THE NEED FOR MINORITIES IN THE REGISTRY
Because tissue types are inherited, patients are most likely to match someone of their own race or ethnicity. Registry members from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds are especially needed. Caucasians make up 74% of the registry. Hispanic/Latino make up 10% of registry, African American/Black make up 7%, Asian/South Asian make up 7%, Multiple Races make up 3%, American Indian/Alaska Native make up 1%, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander make up 0.1%.
Registry Members of These Backgrounds Are Urgently Needed:
- Hispanic or Latino
- Native American
- Black or African American
- Asian, Including South Asian
- Alaskan Native
- Hawaiian Native or other Pacific Islander
- Multiple Race
This wide gap of underrepresentation is the sole reason Guardian Angel Council was established; to raise the registry counts of minorities in the Be the Match Registry ® by educating the community with the process and to show that you can have fun while doing so!
The Guardian Angel Council is exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Contributions to Guardian Angel Council are deductible under section 70 of the Code.
